The three box method

Here it is. Takes five minutes to learn. Works on everything you make from now on.

What each box is for

Style of Music. 1,000 characters. What the song is. Genre, mood, instruments, vocal character, production, tempo feel.

Since v4.5 Suno reads full sentences here, not just tags. Their own before and after:

Old way:

deep house, emotional, melodic

New way:

Create a melodic, emotional deep house song with organic textures and hypnotic rhythms. Begin with soft ambient layers, natural sounds, and a deep, steady groove. Build gradually with flowing melodic synths, warm basslines, and intricate, subtle percussion.

Write it the new way.

Lyrics. 5,000 characters. Your words, plus square bracket tags that tell Suno the shape of the song and how to sing it. Tags are instructions. They do not get sung.

Exclude. Under Advanced Options. Everything that must not appear. Negatives go here and only here. "No drums" in the style box does nothing. "drums" in Exclude works.

The formula for the style box

genre → mood → instruments → vocal → production → tempo feel

Order matters. Suno weights what it reads first. Lead with the genre.

Four to seven descriptors. Two is vague. Thirty is mud.

The nine rules

Lead with the genre. It outweighs everything else in the box.
Two genres. Three at the absolute most. "Reggaeton and amapiano" is a fusion. "Reggaeton hardstyle phonk afrobeats" is a mess.
Name instruments, not adjectives. "Energetic" and "epic" tell Suno nothing. "Brushed snare, upright bass, warm Rhodes" tells it everything. If you change one thing today, change this.
Never use an artist name. Covered on the last page. It is deleted before the model reads it. Describe the fingerprint instead: era, tempo, instruments, vocal texture, production.
Tempo is a feel, not a lock. "Around 128 BPM, driving" works. "127 BPM" will not be obeyed like a metronome.
No square brackets in the style box. Brackets belong in Lyrics.
No mixing desk jargon. "Sidechain compression on the kick" is ignored. "Pumping, breathing groove" is understood.
Negatives always go in Exclude.
Do not contradict yourself. "Sparse and minimal, huge wall of sound, intimate, stadium" gives you exactly the confusion you would expect.

The vocal system

This is the one that cost me the evening.

The instruction goes in three places at once. A description in Style. A tag in Lyrics. The opposite in Exclude.

Two out of three is where failures happen. One out of three is where I was living.

Same reason people get singing on tracks they wanted instrumental. [Instrumental] is a Lyrics tag. It works nowhere else.

Stadium anthem pop

Style of Music Big-room modern pop anthem, triumphant and wide open. Starts with a single piano chord and a lone voice, then floods in with punchy programmed drums, layered synth pads, and a bright plucked hook. Soaring female lead with stacked harmonies on the chorus. Radio-clean, loud, glossy production with huge reverb tails. Driving, around 122 BPM.

Exclude male vocals, distorted guitar, lo-fi

Make it yours: swap "female" for "male" in Style, and flip the Exclude line to match. Swap "piano" for "muted guitar" for a warmer opening.

Look at what that Style field is doing. Genre first. Mood. Four named instruments, no adjectives pretending to be instruments. Vocal. Production. Tempo as a feel. Six slots, in order, full sentences.

When it still comes out wrong

Do not re-roll blind. Find the row. Fix the cause.
